Omeprazole is the generic name of acid reflux Prilosec. It is a medication for the people suffering from chronic acid reflux disease. Acid reflux Prilosec is available both as an over the counter drug and also as a prescription drug. Acid reflux Prilosec falls under the Proton Pump Inhibitor category. Drugs under this group provide cure from acid reflux in a two way process i.e. by blocking the production of acid and also helping the damaged esophageal layer to heal. Acid reflux Prilosec is extremely useful in providing relief from heartburn, throat irritation and dryness, difficulties in swallowing and other such symptoms associated with acid reflux problem. It can be used in combination with antibiotics to cure certain types of ulcers. It acts by stopping the acid production and helps in preventing acid damage to the digestive system. Acid reflux Prilosec however is not meant for immediate relief and therefore antacids can be taken along with to provide instant relief. Acid reflux Prilosec should be administered in the dosages prescribed by the pharmacist or the physician. Increased dosage can lead to other complications whereas a reduced dosage may not have the affect. Ideally, acid reflux Prilosec should be taken at least 30 minutes before meal, in an empty stomach. This drug should be taken everyday for a period of at least 2-3 weeks. One must consult whether any other vitamins or supplements can be administered. Also, women who are suffering from acid reflux problems and heartburn must mention if they are pregnant or nursing. Similarly, the doctor must be informed of your past history of diseases especially those related to liver, stomach etc. It is also important to talk about the food habits and any other precautions while using Acid reflux Prilosec. Tobacco smoking and alcohol intake may decrease the affectivity of acid reflux Prilosec and this must be discussed with the physician. Since Proton Pump Inhibitors work by reducing or blocking the stomach acids, other drugs such as Ketoconazole (an antifungal agent) and some forms of ampicillin (antibiotic), that require an acidic environment for absorption into the body may not be as well absorbed. Side Effects of Acid Reflux Prilosec Though not commonly seen, yet during the usage of acid reflux Prilosec, one may have an upset stomach followed by diarrhea, headache or even vomiting tendency. In some persons, it may cause skin irritation and development of rashes. If such conditions persist, consult your doctor.
