Proper Diet For Acid Reflux

Proper acid reflux diet refers to the food items that one should include in the everyday meals to prevent episodes of acid reflux. A good balanced diet can help ease the acid reflux symptoms and normalize your life. Balanced diet is one which contains the right mix of carbohydrate, vitamins, minerals and proteins. All this should be combined with sufficient quantities of water intake (roughly 8-10 glasses per day).

The first tip to plan an acid reflux diet is to include a lot of vegetables and fruits in your meals. Vegetables and fruits are alkaline rich food and prevent bouts of acid reflux. Acid reflux diet also requires knowledge of healthy cooking methods that keep the nutritional value of food intact. Also important for a healthy acid reflux diet is the potion size that one consumes per meal. Alcohol consumption in an empty stomach aggravates the acid reflux. If consuming alcohol is unavoidable, then take extremely small pints and combine it with sufficient quantity of liquid and finger foods.

Contrary to the popular belief, citrus food such as oranges, grape fruit etc can form a part of an acid reflux diet as they do not leave any acidic residues on digestion. Similarly, milk is not effective in reducing symptoms of acid reflux and should be avoided. Products containing caffeine and nicotine should be excluded from the acid reflux diet. Even chocolates are known to cause heartburn and acid reflux in some people.

Making a practice of consuming one fruit after meal is a healthy acid reflux diet. Eating small meals 5-6 times a day is a better option than sticking to three large meals. The breakfast, which happens to be the first meal after a long night sleep, should be heavy. Dinners should be light and simple. Prefer going to bed at least 2-3 hours after the dinnertime.

Cooking methods such as baking and boiling are healthier and nutritious as compared to frying. It is a good idea to sauté the vegetables. Overcooking food is not a healthy practice for preparing a good acid reflux diet.

People who are on an acid reflux diet should avoid a lot of tomato products. These products are high in acid which can trigger a reflux episode. The same goes for foods that contain garlic and onions. While these foods can be enjoyed in small amounts, it is best to limit their intake. Chocolate and fried foods fall into this same category. These foods tend to be heavy and take up more room in the stomach. The more food which is in the stomach, the more acid it takes to digest it.

Breads, pasta, salads, clear soups are preferable varieties of food to be included in acid reflux diet. Chips, spicy condiments to go with food, pickles can cause heartburn. Another important ingredient that should be completely eliminated from an acid reflux diet is tomato. Tomato in any form, pickles or sauces should be avoided as these increase the levels of acid and can be extremely harmful for people with problems of acid reflux.

You can surely have a healthy acid reflux diet with a little bit of imagination and innovation in the recipes and the cooking methods.
